Of all the Chinatowns in all the world, nothing ever is like Hong Kong. San Francisco has come rather close, but nothing is like home. Growing up in Hong Kong, one of my favorite parts of Chinese New Year was receiving “Lai See” – red & gold packets filled with crisp money inside. Instead of giving gifts you give money, always giving Lai See to someone younger. See that’s what I love, everything in Chinese culture has MEANING behind it all. Every celebration, myth, festival or event is filled with color, history, and culture. This is what I love and cherish most, and you don’t have to be Chinese to be involved. It’s a wonderful celebration for all! I may not be in Hong Kong celebrating Chinese New Year with my crew, but home is where the heart is – and Hong Kong you stole it a long long time ago. KUNG HEI FAT CHOY everyone! Have a happy and prosperous year of the HORSE! xox
