Tell me I’m not alone when I say I’m in a fashion rut and having difficulty getting out. Can anyone relate? I stare aimlessly at my closet, which hasn’t been updated since before the pandemic. Yeah, that long! I haven’t put any effort into updating my style, but after so long, I’m ready to get a new wardrobe, fresh with new looks that reflect me today and not from another year.
As I’ve changed, I’ve always believed that style changes over the years, what I lean into changes, and what sparks joy, changes. Here are some actionable tips I’ve been taking to help me escape a fashion rut and embrace a more classic way of dressing.
- Seek Inspiration Everywhere: Inspiration is everywhere, from fashion magazines to social media, street style to nature. I’ve gotten back into scrolling Pinterest and looking at mood boards. I Look for themes that resonate with my vibe, which is minimalist chic. Drawing inspiration from diverse sources can spark creativity and help reimagine one’s wardrobe in new ways.
- Mix and Match: One of the easiest ways to breathe new life into your wardrobe is by experimenting with unexpected combinations, such as pairing a tailored blazer with distressed denim or layering a slip dress over a turtleneck. Play with textures, colors, and proportions.
- Accessorize, Accessorize, Accessorize: I probably underutilize this trait. Accessories can elevate even the simplest of outfits. Experiment with statement jewelry, scarves, hats, belts, and bags to add personality. A bold accessory can instantly transform and inject a basic ensemble with your unique style sensibility.
- Step Out of Your Comfort Zone: It’s easy to gravitate toward familiar silhouettes and color palettes, but mixing it up can lead to exciting discoveries. Try new trends, experiment with different styles, or incorporate pieces you wouldn’t typically wear. You might be pleasantly surprised by the results and uncover hidden gems in your wardrobe.
- Revamp Your Basics: Basics are the building blocks of a versatile wardrobe, but they don’t have to be boring. Look for updated versions of classic staples, such as a white button-down shirt with unexpected details or a pair of jeans in a modern silhouette. Investing in quality basics that fit and flatter your figure will serve as a solid foundation for creating effortlessly chic looks.
- Go Thrifting or Shop Secondhand: I love a good vintage hunt! Exploring thrift stores, vintage shops, or online resale platforms to uncover unique pieces with character keeps the wardrobe fresh.
- Trust Your Instincts: Fashion is about self-expression and feeling confident in what you wear. Trust your instincts and embrace what makes you feel good. Whether you’re drawn to classic elegance, bohemian vibes, or edgy streetwear, own your style with confidence and authenticity.
