cc-buyUnique Artistic Chess Sets Man Ray Chess Pieces. Best known for his avant -garde photography, Man Ray was a significant contributor to the Dada and Surrealist movements. Now take a wild guess at what he liked to do for fun? Hmmmmm. That’s right Chess! Known for his sense of humor and love of history, he was encouraged by famed artist and chess playing partner Marcel Duchamp to create a series of chess sets. This being the first one he designed in 1920. Man Ray wanted to use geometric and mathematical forms that tied in with history. The pyramid represents an Egyptian king’s tomb, the medieval queen is represented using the cone of her headdress, the wine flask is the bishop who makes healing liquors and the knight is designed after the carved scroll of a violin. Made in Germany with solid beech wood, all 32 pieces were granted by the Man Ray Trust, based on exact reproductions of his 1920 wood set. A stunning addiction to any chess player or art collectors collection.
